Meet the Teachers

Lisa Schamess and Derrick Weston Brown are on the permanent faculty of Emerson Preparatory School. Norma Porter Anthony is an award-winning digital journalist and graduate student in the Interactive Journalism program at American University.



Lisa has taught literature and writing at Emerson since 2003 and co-chairs the English & Communications Department. She has headed the College Counseling program since 2009. She is also an award-winning novelist and essayist whose recent work has appeared in Defunct Magazine and is upcoming in Creative Nonfiction magazine. Her daughter Mona, a rising 7th grader at Deal Middle School, was one of the participants in WordPlay.



Derrick, a poet-in-residence at Busboys and Poets, joined the Emerson faculty in Spring 2011. His first book of poems, Wisdom Teeth, was just released by PM Press in April. He has extensive experience with middle-school and high-school age children, having also taught creative writing in the DC Public Schools, including at Duke Ellington School of the Arts.





Norma is most recently an acting assistant editor and staff writer for The Washington Informer Newspaper for two years. During her time at the Informer, Norma covered local and national education, politics, arts/entertainment and community news. She also assisted in the production of the Washington Informer News Show. Norma has taught journalism to students in the D.C. Summer Youth Employment Program. As a freelancer she has contributed to AOL Politics Daily’s midterm election coverage, Patch.com, Ebony and The Crisis Magazines.
